Maroon 5 & Avril Lavigne – “Smilephone”

Plenty of songs are recycled over and over by producers and given to different artists with new lyrics. Examples of this are Dr. Luke with About You Now by Sugababes and My Life Would Suck Without You by Kelly Clarkson, Ryan Tedder with Kelly Clarkson’s Already Gone and BeyconcĂ©’s Halo, Dr. Luke with P!nk’s U + Ur Hand and The Veronicas’ 4ever.

The latest of the bunch is Shellback recycling his track Smile by Avril Lavigne and turning it into Payphone by Maroon 5.

I’ve created a mashup of the two. Unfortunately I wasn’t able to get my hands on the official vocal track for Smile but it still shows how easily Smile and Payphone fit together. You can listen to it below:

Maroon 5 – “Payphone”

Maroon 5’s new single Payphone, from their upcoming studio album Overexposed, premiered today. The track features Wiz Khalifa and it’s produced by Shellback and Benny Blanco.

Payphone is definitely one of the poppiest Maroon 5 singles to date. The strong melody sung by Adam Levine and aided by the melancholic piano, makes the song ridiculously catchy on first listen. This is backed by a marching band style of drums. It’s so simple but so effective.

As a long time Maroon 5 fan, I’m very happy with the results of the band working with bigger producers. Even the rap by Wiz Khalifa fits the song and adds to it. This is going to be a huge hit.

You can listen to Payphone below:

Overexposed is out June 26th.
